Item #1: Winners!
The winners of the Losing Better Prize packs are
A- Megan!
B- Eleanor!
C- Aardappelen!
I'll be in touch shortly. Yay! Exclamation points!!1!1one!
Item #2: Review!
And now, a moment of appreciation for this incredibly thoughtful review of Losing Better from Melanie at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words. Melanie gave it 4.75 stars and said:
Thank you, Melanie, for giving it a chance. (Oh and extra thanks for giving Gabriel a chance. Of course!)
Item #3: New Book!
Liam is here!
I know, I know, I just had a book, but the other me has one out for Valentine's today. This is the love story for monsters I've mentioned before, and I do think it'd appeal to some readers of superpowered/elemental/fae love. Nasty vampires love can be really good times, if you're into that sort of thing. To quite my friend John, vampire sex is a lot like shark sex. Lots of blood and thrashing around...
Anyhow, please check it out, because it's all vampy screwed-upness with a bisexual vibe and lots of weird little vampirey details and weird side characters--all of which will have major consequences down the road, because this is one big story getting started with one small romance (of a sort) here.

I love Riot Boy and wondered how Katey Hawthorne was ever going to be able to supplant that book in my heart and then she writes Losing Better, one white hot tale of love and lust between two emotionally messed up and diametrically opposed men. I also think that the characters the author created for Losing Better are the most complex, difficult, and yet thoroughly human (albeit with super powers) people we have seen from her.*beam*

Love Stories for Monsters
October 4, 2012
Sorry for the radio silence this past week, but I've been running around a lot as The Other Me. I wrapped up a big and super exciting editing project, had a short story coup, and on top of that I'm prepping for a new novel release within the next, eh, two months, I'm pretty sure. I've mentioned this before, but seeing as the time is drawing nigh, I figured I'd pop on over here and talk for a sec about what's going on with that, because I think some of y'all might be interested.

This sulky fellow is Liam Corchoran.
He's the "hero" of my upcoming vampire novel (if the blood didn't give that away) as KV Taylor, which is named after him, and part of a larger series called The Family. Although the larger arc of the series is not that of a romance, Liam's book is what I call a love story for monsters. It is messy and dysfunctional and dark and a lot of other things most of my romances as Katey Hawthorne are not. In spite of the main plot being a love story, in essence, it's horror-oriented--these are not friendly vampires, they have no respect for human life, and they regret absolutely nothing. (Eventually.) Their relationships are suitably dysfunctional, because frankly, monsters don't get to have nice boys.
The second book in the series will pick up where Liam leaves off, and it will no longer qualify as a "romance". However, the, erm, special attachment between him and his vampire-maker/boyfriend-lover/what the fuck ever is not only an integral part of the continuing plot (they are, in fact, the core of what becomes The Family), but it is what starts an epic vampire clusterfuck snowballing.
Hence the pen-name difference.
So basically I'm dropping by today to point out that it's a thing and lay an excerpt on you. This is from the still-human Liam's point of view, and a bit more romancey than horrory, in keeping with the usual content of this blog. It happens on the way home from one extremely fucked-up frat party full of voyeurism, beer, hallucinations, weed, and dancing a liiiittle bit too close. (Note to those reading it on an rss feed like goodreads--the formatting might suck. If you want, hop over to the blog and check out the original.)
"You're standing too close." It just came
out, but I didn't regret it. It felt like I'd let the pressure out of a bottle
that had been about to explode. Muscles I hadn't known were tense relaxed, my
skeleton stopped quivering so violently, and I leaned my head against the cold
stone wall.
"I was under the impression that you liked
it," he said, as if that were a perfectly normal thing to say.
And maybe it was. I couldn't trust my own judgment
anymore, clearly. "Things get fucked up when you get close."
Another pause, this one not so long. Then, "I
see."
Jesus Christ, what did that mean? He couldn't know how fucked up, of course, there was no
goddamn way, but--
"Why is that, do you think?"
I leveled a glare at him. "I don't know."
"Do you want to?"
I started reply with the negative, but paused.
He pursed his lips. "You were about to lie to me
again."
"Fuck you."
"That's a little extreme. Try kissing me."
There was a loud whooshing sound in my ears. I stared,
utterly stupid.
"If you want to know," he said, as if this
were some kind of school exercise, and I his recalcitrant pupil, "then
kiss me."
I swallowed hard. He had every reason to imagine that
was what I wanted, though--particularly after tonight. Hell, maybe it was what
I wanted. I remembered the hallucination then, heard words he'd never said: I saw you watching me. You know I watched
you.
The rush in my ears grew deafening. I choked out,
"The fuck kind of thing is that to say?"
"The sensible kind. Whether you like it or not,
at least you'll know."
His calmness only made me tense up again. Sweet, sweet
anger flooded back into my emotional muddle.
He went on, "Well, my mistake. I believed you
when you said you weren't scared. Maybe you're right; I don't know you at
all."
"Fucking right you--" But then I realized my
options there were either that he didn't know me, or I was scared, and it
dissolved into a kind of inarticulate growl.
He didn't move, just stood there, eyes flickering in
the dark. Then he licked his lips.
And he saw me watch him do it.
He made as if to push off the wall. "All right then--"
Feeling very much like a fish on a hook, I grabbed his
wrist and stopped him with a jerk. "Is this your stupid game? Have you
been gambling on me all night?"
His eyes flicked down to my fingers around his arm,
then back up, but he didn't make a move to get free. "Not until just now,
really. How did you guess?"
"I didn't have to guess." I thought I was
bluffing before I said it, but afterwards I wasn't so sure. I had seen him
tonight, the real him; I'd known it then, and I was sure of it now. This night
was just one big fucking game, and I was sick of it. Sick of feeling scared,
confused, mortified, and dizzy by turns. Sick of being turned on and off like a
goddamn light switch for his entertainment. This was no hallucination, it was
absolutely real, and I was in control, goddammit.
His eyebrows disappeared under his bangs. "I'm
starting to think you're the one playing with me."
My free hand balled up into a fist. God, I wanted to
do it so badly--
He pursed his lips. "Well now I want to know."
And then he kissed me.
I didn't pull back; I didn't really react at all. I
expected it to be like kissing a mannequin, lifeless and hard and boring.
But instead he was very much alive, and his breath on
my face a cocktail of the familiar and alien: beer and cigarettes and girl something
faintly metallic. His lips gave a little at first, then pushed forward and
apart, locking onto mine.
I tensed when I realized I was reflexively kissing him
back. But he put one hand at the back of my head, tangled in my hair, and
tilted his face to get a better angle. He closed his lips and mine went with
them, sealed off the little kiss, then started a new, deeper one all over
again.
It happened so fast, the most improbable ten seconds
of my life to date, but I was still very conscious of my ability to stop and
walk away. There was nothing helpless about it, nothing dreamlike or confusing.
Yet I couldn't help thinking that I would snap out of it and see him walking
away or making some flippant comment, and realize I'd imagined this, too. The
thought made me so angry I just kissed him harder. I pushed in on him, grabbed
at his coat with one hand and tightened my grip on his wrist with the other.
Maybe to make sure he was really there, maybe to make sure he couldn't get
away.
I thought he'd try, but instead he seemed to melt
against me. His lips went softer, his mouth opened up under mine. When I tugged
at his coat, he came closer. When I bent my head, he resituated to accommodate
the new angle. I was lulled by this perfect intuition, totally lost in the
warmth and wetness of his mouth and the unexpected thrill it gave me. For one
silent, suspended moment, I almost forgot how fucked up it was.
But then I thought of him kissing that girl on the
couch, like he meant it. I thought about how I couldn't look away, even though
I knew it was wrong. I thought of him licking his lips, purple from wine, sitting
on my bed.
And then his tongue flicked out and searched the edge
of my bottom lip.
I stopped breathing.
His fingers tightened in my hair, sending a warm,
liquid shock through my entire body.
And then it was over. His lips closed, pulled away
from mine. I hadn't opened my eyes but I could feel him breathing, so close.
I tried not to pant for air, clutching at him
fitfully, head spinning.
"Oh, fuck." He sighed.
I opened my eyes and he was staring straight into
them. I don't know what the fuck I expected, but it hadn't been surprise. His
eyes were wide, and his mouth--god, it was painfully fascinating now--hung
slightly open.
I had just enough presence of mind to think that this
new and unguarded expression should not make me desperate to kiss him again.
"Well, there's my answer, at least." His
voice sounded stretched tight, but not in an angry way. He swallowed visibly.
"How awfully complicated this is."
That did seem to sum things up, yeah.
So if this sounds like your kind of thing, definitely check out the website, where there are updates, other excerpts, character bits, art, etc. And there's an ongoing feature at my author blog where the boys do a kind of vampire movie review thing that is honestly a bit MST3K. I'll come bug y'all again when the pre-order happens, but until then, back to your regularly scheduled superpowering and wingsex. *salute*
Housekeeping (or, a new introduction)
May 1, 2012
This is a sort of housekeeping post, an addendum to the introduction in the bio/faq. I've met a lot of people since this whole Superpowered Love thing started not-quite-a-year ago, many of whom I now converse with regularly on twitter, tumblr, etc. And I realized that the other me, which shares all online accounts apart from main blogs, may be slightly confusing. As in "what the hell is Katey tweeting so much about zombies and fish for?" confusing.
Therefore, here's a little reintroduction.
As Katey Hawthorne I do this, all these things here at kateyhawthorne.com, which serves as both the Superpowered Love blog and a place for me to make information about my LGBTQ romance novels (three so far, loads more in the pipeline) available--plus talk about romance and comics and other vaguely related things with like-minded types. There are generally explosions and happy endings and lots of love in these books. But that's the me that's less confusing, from this point of view.
The other me is KV Taylor. This is the dark side, I reckon. As KV I write stuff best termed "dark fantasy", but it often shares the LGBTQ bent of my romance. (It also often at least has a romantic subplot--but the HEA is far from guaranteed.) I've had a large handful of horror and dark fantasy short fiction published over the years. Scripped, my first novel, is essentially a love story, but extremely dysfunctional and flat out creepy. It's kind of my thing. My second, Liam, is a vampire novel coming out late this year. But I'll talk more about that later, I'm sure, because I'm just gearing up for a site redesign and a final runthrough on my end--plus, I got my art. Eee!
I also edit as KV Taylor. I'm the query manager at Morrigan Books--which means I read and funnel novel submissions. As a writer, you can imagine how sympathetic I am about handling that kind of thing, but there is no better feeling than getting to tell someone yes. A book I co-edited for them with Amanda Pillar, Ishtar, is doing really well with the awards ballots this spring, and I'm very proud of it. I'm working on co-editing with Carrie Cuinn of Dagan Books an upcoming spec fic anthology called Fish. It's going to be beautiful. I feel really honored to work with such fabulous authors and passionate publishers.
I run a free-to-read, pulpy spec fic magazine called The Red Penny Papers. It's been going for a year and a half now, and gathering steam all the while. We publish short fiction quarterly and about three times a year do a web serial. After, we release all our fiction as (currently, limited-run) eBooks. I've never had so much fun in my life as I do collecting these gems from authors and recruiting artists to portray them for the covers. If I actually make a few bucks selling stories, RPP is where it all goes.
In June I run Fae Awareness Month. It is the best month. Also, Yeats was a dirty fae propagandist, and people need to be warned. Obviously.
All of that is the bulk of me and who I am and what I do. For the other stuff, my books probably tell you everything. I like loud music, gin, tattoos, comics, movies, cable TV, sex, live music, guitars, vampires, swearing, obsessing, fairy tales, art history, whiskey, costume dramas, traveling, and all other manner of things that are terrible for you, but at least I'll go out happy. I live just outside Washington, DC with a very nice dude called Balaji and a mutant cat called Lucy. I'm a vegetarian bisexual atheist who enjoys the company of people who disagree with me utterly.
So now if you see me going on and on around twitter about these things, you know why. They may be of interest or not, but hey, housekeeping, right?
And now, back to squeeing over slashy pairings I never thought I'd be able to imagine without a shudder. Because yes, yes I DID just buy that issue of FF #17.

Friday = Excerpts + Giveaway
February 8, 2012
A quick announcement/forewarning type deal about stuff happening on Friday, February 10:
1. Nobody's Hero Excerpts -- well, at least one of them. There will be at least two on the page, as usual, one very sexy, one a bit shouty. Which kind of describes Jamie and Kellan together. Well, no, they don't shout, but Kelly does tend to, uh, prickle.
2. A V-Day giveaway. You will have to do quite literally nothing but leave your email or twitter or some other way for me to get hold of you. I'll be giving away two books of the winner's choice -- including Nobody's Hero, for those who have already been awesome enough to grab the first two. So come back on Friday, if you can!
A quick reminder/attention grabber about things that have happened just recently but may still be of interest:
1. Badass 5 star review of Riot Boy at Joyfully Jay. Holy crap, she so gets Etienne. I cannot express how happy this makes me. Thanks for taking a chance on it, Jay!
(FUCK ME, ETIENNE t-shirts really should be a thing...)
2. Giveaway at Joyfully Jay includes a copy of Riot Boy, but that's just one among many. I'm reading along to keep up with a lot of her reviews (just finished Reverb, which I think she's reviewing tomorrow, guh) and mmmmm so much rock star goodness.
3. If you like your fae superdark, angsty, dreamy, and magical, you can win a free copy of The Other Me's debut novel, Scripped. That's a fun giveaway -- you get to bring a date :D
It is not the same cracky love you might know from This Me, but it's still love. Extremely dysfunctional and laced with pain, but hey. Some of us like it both ways. *Cough* See prologue here or excerpts at the official site, if you wanna know what I mean.

A Different Kind of Giveaway
November 14, 2011
Different in that it comes from the other me, and asks you to do stuff. But hey, some of y'all may like it!
So you may or may not know that I am two people. I write dark fantasy as KV Taylor, and have for some years. My first full-length novel as such, Scripped, is coming out at the end of this week, and I'm pretty excited about it -- obviously. But I realized it might appeal to some superpowered love readers as well, because while it's primarily a dark paranormal/urban fantasy, it does have a romantic subplot. Actually, most people who've seen it refer to it as a paranormal romance. If a very disturbing one. Think Faerie Stockholm Syndrome and you're there.
But you can win cool dark fiction eBooks by doing a signal boost for me, and the post about this giveaway is here! If you do end up pre-ordering the print version of Scripped, I'm hooking up the first couple of people to email me and let me know with these cool signed, numbered chapbooks I made. Again, these are dark fantasy, but the first story is a love story. A nasty fairy tale style love story, but still. So if you decide to order it, definitely email kate AT kvtaylor DOT com and tell me so I can hook you up. (Scripped will be an eBook too -- I'll post on Friday when everything drops.)
I thought I'd excerpt the prologue, which might explain a little about why I thought it was relevant:
Scripped: You might escape the fae, but you can never go home.
And now back to your regularly scheduled superpowered updates~

I thought I'd excerpt the prologue, which might explain a little about why I thought it was relevant:
A frantic rush of hands; warm against still-cold skin, cold against still-warm skin. Jonah’s heart thudded harder than he could remember in a long time, and he ate it up. This wasn’t a fantasy he had to check, this wasn’t wrong or stupid or broken of him. This was real, finally.
Lips began to lose their frosty stiffness, so he took a break and turned his face to the fire to get his own warmth back. It was working: Tal was warming up, and it wasn’t numbing Jonah to a slow death.
And it felt. Not that much, it was too cold for that. But it was there.
It had to be there.
“Why you doin’ this?” Tal asked. His chest rose and fell against Jonah’s side, another strange little miracle.
“Because I owe you,” Jonah lied. He was so good at it now, he did it without even thinking.
Tal pursed his lips. It made him look hard and mean, even with this rare flush under the dirty smudges on his skin. “I ain’t looking for pity.”
Jonah felt a stab of guilt. Honesty, then. There was too much to lose. “Because I missed you.”
Out of context, Jonah supposed that might sound romantic, but neither of them had any illusions. Tal’s face softened in a flash of uncommon understanding. As if by magic — and maybe it was magic — he looked real again.
Jonah knew he hadn’t been missed, except as a source of warmth and scrip; he knew he wouldn’t hear it said back. He didn’t want that. “I missed feeling…” but that was the end of the sentence after all, so he stopped.
Tal’s mouth pressed into that line again. That’s how he’d looked when they’d met. Jonah hadn’t known what that face meant, back then.
“So we miss the same thing, now,” Tal said after a moment. This seemed to satisfy him.
Jonah finally asked the question he’d been desperate to ask all night. “Do you know what you are?”
Tal gave the familiar answer. “I’m dead.” And then another addition, newer: “Don’t belong here. Things are familiar, kinda comfortable. But they’re wrong, too.”
Jonah wondered if that explained the stick art, but didn’t ask.
As for what he was, it wouldn’t help Tal to know if he didn’t already, so Jonah didn’t tell him what he’d discovered. His face and throat were warm again, so he leaned close, kissed the fae boy as much to feel as to keep him from saying any more. That odd sensation of unyielding lips, harder than a girl kiss, but Tal had been practicing, or at least he’d listened. He tilted his face to the side so Jonah could get a better angle and scooted as close as he could. Thin, hard hands returned to exploring Jonah’s skin, smooth scarred patches and rougher chlorine-dried stretches alike, warming more and more. Jonah returned the favor, half curiosity, half desperation.
The cabin smelled like cedar and the fireplace. Alien and old, like a memory he was desperate to keep.
Tal tasted like the ground, like the mines, like dirt and rocks. He tasted like home.
Jonah pulled him into his lap, and he came with a disorienting combination of inhuman grace and human willingness. Long legs wrapped around Jonah’s middle, and instead of just stealing his heat, Tal began to share it. The return of some kind of warmth let his body wake up again, really feel the weight of someone in his lap. He could almost imagine there was something more than a need for heat in the way Tal pushed hard against him. It didn’t have that semi-covert rolling of the hips, the methodical angling of compatible body parts against each other, but it was artless and hungry enough to let him pretend.
A surge of something bright and hot spiked deep inside him, followed by a sense of hysterical relief. Christ, it's been so long.
But he hadn’t wanted to cry in just as long, and now his eyes burned.
He wouldn’t, though. He just kissed with everything in him, just like he’d imagined, like he meant it, and pretended this would last forever. Wondered what would happen next, how far this could go, and if it would leave him better or worse off than he’d been yesterday.
It was hard to care, though. It was like being alive again after a whole year of being dead.
And now back to your regularly scheduled superpowered updates~
